New reference sensors in and it’s back to running as it did before. In retrospect, I’m so glad I had a shop do that job, God knows how many walls would have been punched if I kept at it when I tried before...
Anyways, this is what’s left on my constantly fluctuating to-do list for “The Red E”
Trans fluid change.
Adjusting the passenger door handle.
Fixing the now intermittent passenger side window switches(one on the driver’s side, the other on the passenger side.
Repaint rocker panels
Replace driver’s side rear marker light bulb
Not that bad of a list, for now. I also might be saying bye to the regular plate on the car, as we dad and I may be switching to Hagerty insurance for both cars, and that requires mine getting a historical plate; something I’m kinda mixed about. In any case, I’m just content with having the car back before classes start on Monday. ^_^

Does Hagerty really require you to put on a historic plate? Aren’t there mileage limitations with doing that? I have to figure out who I’ll be insuring my 911 with when its completed this spring. I was looking at Grundy initially, but Hagerty is the other big one.

I’m honestly not sure. That’s what my dad had told me when we talked about it. The mileage restrictions are my primary concern/gripe with putting on a historical plate. Unlike his 911, I essentially drive my 944 every day I can from March to November, it’s a driver’s car. I don’t want to be restricted by mileage at all, and there are already restrictions with having a historical plate according to the Michigan Secretary of State:
Historical vehicles
A historical vehicle must be:
26 or more years old
Owned solely as a collector’s item
Used only for events such as historical club activities, parades and car show
Note: A vehicle registered with a historical or authentic plate cannot be used for routine, day-to-day transportation.
The way I use the car, I break the last rule without failure.

It’s the same way in Massachusetts. I’m definitely putting regular plates on my car as I plan to drive it everyday that it isn’t raining (not because I’m scared of getting it dirty, but because I’m scared of it killing me in the wet).

What year is yours? I’ve driven ours in the wet and I’m still alive!

In Texas there is classic and antique. Classic can’t be your primary but it’s inspected and you have to maintain liability. Antique is limited to shows, events, is not inspected, and does not require liability. You probably want to go classic if you can. A lot of people do get away with a Sunday drive on antique plates, but it is illegal, though I’m not sure what the consequences are. Getting in an accident they aren’t going to pay so if you register as an antique you may as well not carry insurance at all.

It’s a 1986, but it’s going to be making about 275 horsepower and weigh about 2400 pounds. Not to mention my commute is all on the Mass Pike, which floods in some spots when it rains, and still has drivers doing about 85. I’m sure I could manage with it, but it would be hairier than I would like.

Everything that’s wrong with this whole debacle, you’ve pretty much just said. -_-

Geez, what are you doing to that 3.2? :p
I wouldn’t be too worried about flood waters, I’ve driven my 944 through some deep stormy waters this summer and it’s survived. Then again, it is a completely different car. How deep of water do you get?

There’s usually a stipulation (at least there is in TN) that you’re good to drive it to and from the mechanic’s on any day. I would assume that this includes test runs for recent work (which you can probably talk your way out of in the highly unlikely event that you’re pulled over for driving a historical plate on a tuesday afternoon).

I’ll be working on the car just about all the time.
“I need to test drive it because I fixed the interior and need to check for rattles to see how it’ll hold up on a daily basis...” :p
I think that’s a fair excuse.

Classic is really cheap liability, the only downside is full coverage isn’t really an option because they use original sale price plus depreciation, so you’d basically get a couple hundred if something happened so it isn’t worth paying. I think the only requirement is you have to have a new car registered as a dd. Even if your state doesn’t have classic registration your insurance company will probably give you a classic policy. It’s like 15$ a month or so, and no restrictions.

I have a strong feeling that you would get in trouble for breaking the historic plate rule. Also, you can use a year of manufacture plate, which would be kinda cool.

Haha, actually alot. JE Pistons, 2.7 Crank, 993 Cams, Weber Carb Conversion, custom tuning, and some other odds and ends. Redline should be somewhere ridiculously high as a result too. The rains here come down hard and then subside, but depending on the dips in the road the water sometimes pools up around an inch. The alternative route I take to work has serious flooding issues,

God damn...Why’d you go with a 2.7 crank though? I want to hear this fine piece of machinery when it’s done!
And my goodness that’s some bad flooding.

How do you even get one of those year of manufacture plates anyways? And I’m totally gonna break that rule every single day no ifs or buts about that. I’ll just have to get clever with my commutes from now on... :/

eBay or elsewhere. I found one in my dad’s plate collection.

Wait, so is your car restricted then?

Supposedly the 2.7 crank is better for building higher power and helps raise the redline. My master mechanic/Porsche restoration specialist, turned friend recommended it. He’s the one building the entire car. We started lasted year with just a 3.2 shell and a list of things I would want in my car. As we’ve progressed with the project, I’ve given my input and he chooses how to best meet those goals. Things like the crank, cams, etc. we’re all his choices to achieve the power goals I was looking for on a reasonable budget. I consider myself fairly knowledgeable about cars, but it would take me three lifetimes to learn what he knows.

Nope, and even if it was I wouldn’t care. Indiana doesn’t have any restrictions at all on historic plates.

Nice! Make sure you remove the fill plug before you remove the drain plus when you do your transaxle. I used Redline fluid in mine but it didn’t really make any improvement. I’m going to switch to the Swepco next year and see if it is better.

What?? That’s exactly why I got Redline... :(
Then again, my trans fluid is probably older than me, so there must be some difference to be felt hopefully; though, I’m not sure exactly what it would be.

I’ve heard good reports from some people who’ve used Redline. It just did absolutely nothing for me. I don’t have synchro issues, but I do have a very loud pinion bearing. The Redline might help with tired synchros. I kind of doubt that the Swepco will do anything about my noisy gearbox, either, but I know the Redline didn’t.

I’m changing it out because I fear I may have the dreaded 2nd gear syncro issue. That and since I have no records of it being done, it’s smart to do so now. It’s funny that the major problems with the engine and tranny both involve a #2 something: The #2 rod bearing and 2nd gear sncyro haha...I cannot shift above 4500rpm into 2nd because it’ll simply grind.
